Everest Project Competition
A competition for best experiment write-up was run in conjunction with the Everest Project.
The judges declared two winners, commenting that the pupils had shown good exploration and use of the data:
Jennifer, Kate and Hannah from Allertonshire School, Northallerton - for linking altitude to increased breathing rate and showing an understanding of the consequences of low 02 on physiology.
Katherine, Claire and Ciara, from Gumley House Convent School, Isleworth - for sensible display and description of data on temperature, and providing an explanation for the trends that they saw.
A certificate will be sent to both schools and each pupil will receive a prize.
New Media thanks all participants.
Guinness World Record Data
Chris carried out his 30-minute science lesson on the Insulating Properties of Mountaineering Clothing at 7010m, a Guinness World RecordTM
for the highest altitude prepared lesson
(lesson.doc 49KB). The data, video and Chris' final
fitness levels,
have been published on the Everest Data Kit page. The completed data template for use with the worksheets is available on the Resources page

Discovering 'real' science for the classroom that excites and
inspires students is a problem faced by teachers worldwide.
With this in mind, software specialist New Media celebrated Science
Year by joining forces with British physics teacher and mountaineer Chris
Mothersdale as he scaled the
world's tallest peak.
Data from sensors attached to Chris' body were transmitted to this
website and published each week during his attempt to conquer Mt
Everest. See equipment page for details of Chris' equipment and clothing.
Pupils taking part in this international schools
experiment have used this 'live' data to monitor the effects of exercise and environment
on Chris' body, make predictions, gather results and draw
conclusions.
Due to the broad range of age groups able to take
part in this event, we have provided icons to help you easily find out
which parts are relevant to you.
